Wellington City Gallery Sculpture Trail

This Wellington City Gallery map acts as a conceptual guide to the Sculpture Trail, for an older or more intellectually advanced portion of the Sculpture Trails visitors. This decision was inspired by the Tate Modern student tour guide PDF, as well as an idea to upgrade a current guide I found for City Gallery’s Trail on their website.

Each of the major works on the trail has been reinterpreted as a pattern, and this pattern has been used as a key. Students would have to study shapes, forms, tones and repetitions within the images on the map and link them to their physical counterpart, encouraging the user to think critically about the physicality of the objects before they had found them. This would aid in their approach to other exercises encouraged by WCG staff, such as taking rubbings and reinterpreting the works in their own ways.

These patterns have been placed on a basic layout of the ground area of Civic Square and the City to Sea Bridge, so that the student can recognize their surroundings and use the map accordingly. The distant ground below the map area also situates the user. The map enhances the escapism found within the experience of immersing ones self in public works of art.
